Presentation of the 34th edition of the Atlantis Cup® Regatta – Regata da Autonomia 2023

The presentation session of the 34th edition of the Atlantis Cup® – Regata da Autonomia 2023 took place on the morning of Tuesday, June 6th, in the Chapel of Pousada Forte da Horta, promoted by the Clube Naval da Horta (CNH) in partnership with the Clube Naval de Santa Maria, Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada, Angra Iate Clube, Clube Náutico de Angra do Heroísmo and which has the High Patronage of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The presentation session was chaired by the Hon. President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Luís Garcia; the Councilor of Horta City Council, Eduardo Pereira; the Vice-President of the Azores Regional Sailing Association, Hugo Pacheco, the President of the CNH, Lúcio Rodrigues and the Race Director, João Morais.

The 34th edition of the Atlantis Cup® – Regata da Autonomia, will take place from July 30th to August 6th, departing from Vila do Porto, in Santa Maria, heading to Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. From there, the regatta will head to Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, from where the sailors will depart for the port of Horta, on the island of Faial, with the sailboats divided into 3 (three) classes, Open, ANC and ORC , with around 12 sailboats already expected to participate in the ANC (National Cruise Association) class.

This year's edition of the regatta will count towards the IX Regional Cruise Sailing Championship. This championship, organized by the Azores Regional Sailing Association, is reserved only for vessels registered in the ORC class. The stages from São Miguel to Terceira and from Terceira to Faial, will count as the Oceanic (Offshore) regattas and, additionally, will consist of another 9 (nine) coastal regattas (Inshore), with three regattas to be held in each of the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Faial.

In addition to the Kwindoo tool that made its debut last year, the new feature that Clube Naval da Horta brings to this year's edition is the introduction of robotic buoys (Smartmarks).

Smartmarks are able to move individually to their pre-determined position, and with just the touch of a button, running routes are defined and adjusted in seconds by just one responsible person. No anchoring equipment is required, as they maintain their position using unique, state-of-the-art sensors and GPS technology. This reduces the impact that the race has on the environment, as there is no need to spend fuel on the marking boats, nor the use of anchors and current buoy chains that cause damage to the seabed.

The notoriety that the Atlantis Cup® – Regata Autonomia has achieved over the last 33 years has contributed to promoting the Azores and dignifying autonomy. It is one of the main regattas on the national nautical scene, attracting countless sailors, characterized by its competitive spectacularity, along with its leisure aspect that is a symbol of union and cohesion between the different islands of the archipelago, making each port a place of sharing and conviviality.

In its organization, the Clube Naval da Horta has the High Patronage of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the support of the Regional Government of the Azores and the Municipal Chambers of Vila do Porto, Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Horta, also counting on various sponsorships from local, regional and national companies.

Clube Naval da Horta would like to thank Grupo Pestana for their helpful collaboration in providing the space in the Chapel of Pousada Forte da Horta, for the presentation of the 34th edition of the Atlantis Cup® – Regata Autonomia.
